History
The Cherrypickers' Golf Society was originally formed many years ago as part of the sports and social club of Gala Engineering. Gala Engineering was a company operating in Thetford, Norfolk manufacturing a wide range of cherry picking access, work platforms and machines used for gaining access to assist in maintenance at both medium and high levels.
The Society was available to both male and female members of the company and played at numerous golf courses in East Anglia. In the late 70's the company was merged with Simon Engineering and became Simon Gala and, later the name of Gala was dropped. By 1980 the company had ceased trading but the remaining members of the golf society decided to continue playing under the name The Cherrypickers.
Membership was opened up to other members of the public and the society has existed in this form ever since. There are now no existing members who worked for the original company and at present the Society consists of golfers from both Norfolk and Suffolk.
The society is always looking for new members, both male and female, and plays on a monthly basis, usually the last Friday of each month, at a variety of courses throughout East Anglia culminating with a “fur and feathers” Christmas contest in December.
Most matches are played to the Stableford format but, included each year, is also the Peter Playle match play knockout event. The Society at present has 19 members with handicaps ranging from 8 to 28, is a most friendly group of people, and would like to see our numbers increased in the coming months.
